Follow-up observations of red 2MASS point sources in the northern hemisphere have led to the identification and classification of a new L type spectral sequence, a critical population that straddles the stellar-substellar regime. We propose to continue investigation of these objects through follow-up observations of southern 2MASS sources discovered with the dedicated 1.3m cassegrain in Cerro Tololo. We will use the 1.5m CIRIM to image our candidate sources, in order to exclude contaminant asteroids; and the 4m IRS in cross-dispersed mode for spectral classification. The primary goal of these observations is to develop a magnitude-limited, complete sample of L dwarfs for population studies. We will also begin follow-up observations of ``blue'' candidates, which we believe will be identified as field methane brown dwarfs similar to Gl 229B.
