Like the Tully-Fisher relation and the fundamental plane for elliptical galaxies, the correlation between a galaxy's metallicity and its luminosity is one of the fundamental relations by which galaxy evolution can be measured. Historically, the luminosity-metallicity relation has been constructed using the absolute B-band magnitude. However, B band photometry is sensitive to dust extinction and recent starburst activity which is why the best Tully-Fisher calibrations use I- band magnitudes. We will produce a more robust luminosity-metallicity relation using new I-band surface photometry of 20 S and Irr galaxies with well-measured chemical properties. A well-calibrated local luminosity-metallicity relation is needed for comparison to new results at higher redshifts which constrain the chemical evolution and star formation history of the universe. Our sample will include local calibrators of the Tully-Fisher relation which lack good I-band photometry because of their large angular diameters.
