The practicality of determining single-scattering polarization properties of dust grains from observations of the polarization is investigated. A simple model resembling the Orion Nebula, consisting of a hemispherical shell of dust in front of an optically thick plane slab, is considered. Only the forward-scattering properties of the dust are important for determining the intensity and polarization of the emergent light from the shell, while the backscattering properties of the dust are critical for determining the intensity and polarization of the light reflected from the slab. When the shell and the slab are combined, assuming the dust is the same in each, it is found that for a shell optical depth greater than about 1 the total intensity is dominated by that of the shell, but the total polarization depends about equally on the shell and the slab.
