We give an exact, simple, and self-contained method for dealing with the dynamical evolution of spherically symmetric inhomogeneities in a Friedmann background. We apply these techniques to the development of-an initially acoustic perturbation. The behavior is shown to be homologous on all mass scales. We find that the formation of the core of the perturbation is followed by the growth of mass shells proceeding sequentially outward behind a rarefaction front. We demonstrate also how limits may be set on the formation red shift of a galaxy from evidence concerning its maximum linear extent.
