It is shown that, to a good approximation, the emission of particles from the pole of an axisymmetrically (dipole) magnetized rotating star consists of particles of one sign from essentially the entire magnetic polar region (polar cap). Particles of the opposite sign are emitted in a thin sheath (auroral zone) at the perimeter of the polar cap. This flow pattern determines the torque on the star and the distribution of plasma and fields at large distances from the star. Thus the basic first-order axisymmetric rotator problem may be considered solved in the limit that the particle inertia is small.
