Penetration of radiation into a dark cloud against scattering and absorption by grains is considered, and the concept of the exclusion optical depth for interstellar grains is introduced. The grain parameters involved in radiative transfer are summarized, and radiative transfer models are described for diffuse and direct illumination. The equations of transfer for scattered and absorbed radiation are derived and applied to multiple scattering. It is found that radiation penetrates into a dark cloud as if against pure absorption only with an exclusion optical depth which is a function of the extinction optical depth, the grain parameters and albedo, and the mean scattering-angle cosine. UV radiation fields are calculated for the centers of dark clouds with a given extinction optical depth in the visual, based on the unobscured radiation density in the vicinity of the sun.
