Using white light photographs of the 30 June 1973 solar eclipse, it is shown that the plumes observed on the south pole are the upper parts of jets originating at the edge of the polar coronal hole (filament channel). A density and temperature model is derived which confirms this interpretation. It is deduced that the XUV plumes associated with bright points do not generally correspond to the white light polar plumes.
