A systematic analysis is presented of the equilibrium points, regions of motion, and periodic orbits of a test particle in the gravitational field of a uniformly rotating solid bar, and a qualitative comparison is made between two different models for the bar: a homogeneous rectangular parallelepiped and a homogeneous ellipsoid. Five families of periodic orbits are analyzed, and it is found that stability properties, especially those of equilibrium points on the long axis of the bar, are more pronounced in the case of the parallelipiped. The results are applied to barred spiral galaxies, and it is suggested that several morphological characteristics of barred spirals may consist of matter trapped by zero-velocity curves or near stable periodic orbits.
