It is demonstrated that the H I in the large, nearby spiral NGC 4258 behaves very much as expected for a normal SAB galaxy, notwithstanding the presence of a pair of anomalous arms indicating some kind of violent activity. The large angular dimensions of NGC 4258 and the good signal-to-noise ratio of the observations allow a detailed study of the properties of the underlying, unperturbed part of the galaxy. Strong evidence for the presence of a bar is found, as well as indications of a high pattern speed, putting corotation well inside the optically observable disk.
