Two X-ray periodicities at 4.95 and 4.86 min were detected in Ariel 5 observations centered on 4U 1145-61 during September and December 1977. The amplitude of the former varied by a factor of 2 while the amplitude of the latter varied by a factor of 7. Small changes in the period over a 50-day period are reported. No evidence for orbital motion was found. An unusual feature of the X-ray spectrum is a break at approximately 9 keV. Spectra of the optical counterpart HEN715 were obtained at 25 A/mm resolution in the range 3700-5300 A and 6200-7200 A, and the H-alpha emission line was observed to change significantly in shape and central wavelength on a time scale of approximately 30 min. It is not known whether 4U 1145-61 is the source of the periodicities or whether there is an unreported source within 1 deg.
