We discuss the importance of hard X- and gamma-ray emission from thermal
X-ray sources to obtain a more realistic picture of these objects. In
particular, we show that the inverse Compton effect is a possible
mechanism of gamma-ray emission from sources of this kind and apply our
consideration to the specific case of Cyg X-2.
