The time required for establishing the Boltzmann vibration level distribution of nitrogen is calculated in relation to the height and initial vibration temperature. Numerical solutions for a system of equations which describe the vibrational relaxation of molecular nitrogen are applied in the procedure. It is found that several minutes are required for establishing the Boltzmann distribution in the midlatitude atmosphere.
