To find the distribution of the potential and its derivatives at a physical surface and to determine the Stokes constants from gravimetric measurements at the surface, one can use an equation, valid for satellite data, for the expansion of the potential by spherical functions. In this case the errors do not exceed (H/r) to the 4-k power, where H is the mean height of the parts of the relief projecting above a sphere passing through the observation point with a radius r and k is the order of the derivative of the potential. There is no need for preliminary regularization of the earth. Attempts to introduce corrections for the influence of projecting parts of the relief may even lead to a considerable error when the allowance for the relief is not sufficiently precise.
