The minimum number of outbursts in classical novae is determined by comparing the nova frequency and stellar death rate in the nuclear bulge of M31. The minimum number of outbursts, which is derived by assuming that all dying stars become novae, is shown to lie between 160 and 660. Because only a fraction of the dying stars will be in binary systems that lead to novae, the true number of outbursts will exceed the minimum number by a factor which may be as large as 100.
