Measurements of the H166-alpha (1.424 GHz) and H66-alpha (22.364 GHz) radio recombination lines toward W3 (OH) are reported. A 1.4-GHz continuum map of the region near W3 (OH) is presented, the radial velocity of the H66-alpha line is determined as about -50.1 km/s, and it is shown that the H66-alpha line data refer to W3 (OH) itself. The nature of the region responsible for emission of the recombination lines arising in the diffuse gas near W3 (OH) is investigated by comparing available observations with a number of postulated physical conditions for the gas. It is concluded that the electron temperature of the line-emitting gas away from the compact sources is of the order of 10,000 K and that the diffuse ionized gas is not at all related to the W3 (OH) region.
