Polarized light, as observed in the case of astronomical objects, is produced in connection with the scattering of unpolarized light at small particles (dust, molecules, electrons) or as a consequence of certain radiation mechanisms, as for instance synchrotron radiation (in quasers). A description is presented of the techniques employed in polarization measurements. The physical characteristics of polarized light are examined and the requirements for the design of suitable polarimeters are considered. The principles of operation of a polarimeter at the Heidelberg Observatory in West Germany are discussed in detail.
