The emission-line and continuous spectra of eight compact nebulae have been measured with the 2.1 m telescope of the Kitt Peak National Observatory. The observations are interpreted in terms of the reddening and self-absorption of each object. Electron densities and temperatures are estimated for each object. These observations are used together with radio data to discuss the nature of each object in comparison with the models of Marsh and of Ahern et al.
