The nature of QSO redshifts is investigated by plotting a Hubble diagram of log (cz) vs K-corrected apparent visual magnitude for a sample of 252 objects selected from a recent catalog of 633 QSOs. A least-squares fit to this plot yields a slope of 0.165 + or - 0.012, as compared with the slope of 0.2 expected theoretically for cosmological redshifts. The discrepancy is attributed partly to uncertainty in the K correction and partly to evolutionary effects. A diagram of log (cz) vs log f (H-beta) is plotted to eliminate the uncertainty due to the K correction, and a least-squares linear fit is obtained which yields a slope of -0.497 + or - 0.076, in close agreement with the theoretically expected value of -0.5. The possibility of luminosity evolution of the 252 QSOs in the sample is examined; it is found that QSO luminosity decreases with redshift and that the decrease becomes more rapid for smaller redshifts. It is concluded that QSOs do evolve in luminosity but the possibility of selection effects cannot yet be completely ruled out.
