A refutation is presented for the arguments advanced by Kumar (1977) to show that Jupiter and Saturn are unlikely to have been formed by the contraction of an initially extended gaseous state. The refutation asserts that satisfactory mechanisms do exist for the evolution of planets from gaseous spheres, termed protoplanets. In addition, Kumar's assumption that Saturn is a completely degenerate body is shown to be misleading.
