Results are presented for a statistical analysis of the measurements of the microwave background radiation spectrum, which already cover more than three orders of magnitude in frequency. Confidence intervals are evaluated for the parameters measuring the deviations from a Planck shape. It appears that the recent balloon data entail some evidence of Compton distortions. The evidence is, however, uncompelling, and the data could still be interpreted as setting only upper limits to the distortions. The need for further, more precise measurements in the Rayleigh-Jeans region is stressed; the detection of distortions there could give direct information on the density parameter and (or) on the epoch at which strong dissipation phenomena occurred.
