Spectroscopy (4470-4800 A) and differential photometry of HD 50896, a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star of type WN5 that is associated with a ring nebula and lies at a distance of 280 pc above the galactic plane, are discussed. The results obtained show that the star is variable with a period of 3.76 days and that the object is apparently a binary. The mass of the WR star is estimated to be 10 solar masses, and a mass of 2 to 4 solar masses, depending on orbital inclination, is inferred for the companion. The relatively small mass of the companion and the large height of the system above the galactic plane are taken as indicating that HD 50896 is a runaway star and that the companion is a collapsar.
