Prospects for the detection of extragalactic radio recombination lines are considered, and criteria for detectability in individual cases are developed. It is shown that any radio recombination line emission from normal galaxies is primarily spontaneous and should be detectable at levels of about 1 to 10 mJy only from relatively nearby systems (out to about 5 to 10 Mpc). However, for radio galaxies and quasars, radio recombination lines are found to be produced mainly by stimulated emission and should therefore be detectable at the 1-mJy level out to cosmological distances. It is suggested that the best sources of radio recombination lines will be broad-line radio galaxies, particularly their narrow-line regions, and that the best frequency will generally be in the range from 1 to 10 GHz. It is noted that the absorption-line regions in front of radio galaxies and quasars might produce detectable stimulated radio recombination lines of carbon in the range from 0.1 to 1 GHz.
