Fundamental characteristics of type I supernovae (SN I) are reviewed, including their occurrence in old disk populations, SN I birth rates as a function of galaxy type, the exponential light curve of SN I, the observed hydrogen deficiency of SN I, and their initial radius. Theoretical models of SN I are discussed, and properties of hydrogen-deficient carbon (HdC) stars are described. Observational properties of the Crab Nebula are summarized which indicate that the progenitor was an old low-mass star. Some anomalous properties of moderate helium stars are considered, and it is shown that the Crab Nebula exhibits evidence of the same anomalies. It is proposed that certain stars may undergo an extended main-sequence phase and that HdC stars might be progenitors of SN I.
