Some observational data are reviewed which pertain to the problem of a possible variation of star formation rate with some power (n) of interstellar gas density. The validity of Schmidt's (1959) empirical law of star formation is examined on the basis of the data, and an attempt is made to determine the value of the exponent n for the Galaxy. The radial and vertical distribution of interstellar gas in the Galaxy is studied, and the radial and vertical distributions of a variety of young objects are derived; these objects include OB stars, Cepheids, OB associations, ionized gas, supernova remnants, and pulsars. The distributions of the interstellar gas and the young objects are compared for the solar neighborhood and for the rest of the galactic disk. Two models with values of n of approximately 1.5 to 2.0 are found to give good fits to Schmidt's law. Some implications of Schmidt's law for models of galactic evolution are briefly discussed.
