A method of band-model opacity is applied to construct model atmospheres for red-giant stars of relatively low effective temperature (M giants). LTE and radiative equilibrium are assumed throughout, and the ionization and dissociation equilibria are solved by considering 18 elements and their major species. Uncertainties in the model atmospheres are evaluated, parameters and physical properties of the model atmospheres are examined, and the observed spectral energy distributions of several representative M giants are fitted to the models. The results suggest effective temperatures of approximately 3900 K for type M0 III, 3800 K for M1 III, 3700 K for M2 III, 3600 K for M3 III, 3500 K for M4 III, 3300 K for M5 III, 3200 K for M6 III, and 2300 K for M8e. The behavior of molecular band intensities as a function of spectral type is investigated. The effective temperatures obtained from the model-atmosphere analysis are checked against the measured angular diameters, IR color indexes, and bolometric magnitudes of 20 red giants.
