The major parameters used in designing a communications link are discussed, and a possible configuration for the transmission and reception of radio signals from a distant interstellar vehicle is proposed. Such a system would utilize a spaceborne receiver facility in order to permit maximum flexibility of design in terms of frequency selection, minimization of losses, link coordination, and the avoidance of extraneous interference. Optimization of the complete system is discussed, and comparisons are made between the proposed configuration and alternative methods.
