Quantitative considerations show that OH productions provided by observations on cometary heads are compatible with H2O sublimation rates of water ice or hydrate ices present within the nucleus. As the presence of H2O molecule within the nucleus is thus confirmed by circumstantial considerations, thermodynamic evidence leaves little alternate possiblity to the presence of clathrate CH4 hydrate. The molecular fragments observed spectrally on cometary heads come from different chemical species which have the particular effect of bunching together the orders of magnitude of all the sublimation rates. This is the reason why it is considered that most volatile molecules could be enclosed in hydrates.
