While interferometric measurements of such angular dimensions as the apparent diameters of single stars and the separations of close binaries remain important, there is growing interest in the interferometric production of images with higher resolution than is obtainable with conventional telescopy. Such images would be able to reveal features including spots on stellar surfaces and the degree of limb darkening; they would also aid the study of objects lacking circular symmetry. Interferometry is also being applied to astrometry, with accuracies that are potentially 10-100 times more accurate than conventional techniques.
