On 11 July 1990, the Soviet space based Gamma observatory was launched.
Gamma was designed to conduct basic research in the field of gamma ray
astronomy. Despite malfunctions in the operation of the science gear,
the observatory has managed to obtain new, important experimental data.
The observatory design and the science instrument package are described.
