The UV images and other supporting data obtained by the Viking satellite were used to determine the general characteristics of dayside aurora. After defining a localized intensification in the auroral images, a statistical survey was made from a data set consisting of 60 Viking passes. Results of this survey indicate that the most probable region in which such features were found was 14-16 MLT and this region often consists of more than one feature which have a spatial periodicity of 0.4 or 0.7 MLT. The source of the afternoon aurora was determined to be the low latitude boundary layer and colocated within a convection reversal region. Dayside aurora was determined to be a conjugate phenomenon which implied they are located on closed field lines. A strong dependence on the solar wind velocity was found for the active cases but no dependence on B_{z } was found. All of this evidence suggests that afternoon aurora are caused by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability acting on the flank of the magnetosphere which is illustrated in a magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling model. The results of this dissertation indicate that this viscous process could play a main role in the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere.
