The paper reports laboratory observations of the 5-0 and 6-0 bands of the HD rotation-vibration spectrum, which were made over absorption paths of up to 3 km in a multiple-traversal absorption cell at 295 K and a pressure of 1.06 atm. Wavelengths in these bands as well as in the 3-0 and 4-0 bands are measured and used along with previous measurements to determine improved molecular constants for HD in the vibrational levels of the ground electronic state ranging from v = 0 to v = 6. Some intensity measurements of lines in the 4-0 and 5-0 bands are also presented, including a direct intensity measurement of the P4(1) line which has been observed in the Jovian spectrum. These measurements raise the deuterium abundance previously determined for Jupiter by a factor of 25 and suggest the possibility of detecting the HD 5-0 band in spectra of the giant planets.
