The paper proposes a morphological classification of the transient irregular variations of the terrestrial magnetic field into two classes. The first class, the worldwide variations, includes Dst-type variations, storm sudden commencements, sudden impulses, and worldwide fluctuations - all having a zonal component - as well as auroral variations and DP2 fluctuations, which are potentially worldwide variations and which have no zonal component. The second class includes the polar cap variations, the auroral pc5 pulsations and the solar flare effects. The application of this classification to the interpretation of statistical results is considered.
