Scientific paper

The paper investigates the stochastic acceleration of charged dust grains as they pass through irregularities in the galactic magnetic field. Grains of radius less than about 3 microns may be accelerated to a speed approximately equal to 0.1 times the speed of light by the magnetic pumping mechanism if there is a sufficient number of scatterings before the grain leaves the spiral arms. If the grain initial velocities are around 1 million m/sec, it is possible to accelerate a significant fraction of small interstellar grains to 0.1 times the speed of light.
