Results are reported for UBV, VRI, and H-beta observations of 56 early-type stars in a field that includes the H II regions NGC 6334 and NGC 6357. A distance of 1.74 + or - 0.31 kpc is derived for both H II regions, which places the two regions in the Sagittarius arm. It is shown that the dark cloud onto which the H II regions are apparently projected is not associated with the regions. The radiation of the known early-type stars associated with the discrete radio sources in the two H II regions is compared with the necessary number of Lyman continuum photons derived from radio continuum data. It is concluded that at least one O5 V star or an appropriate number of later O-type stars must be hidden behind dense absorbing clouds.
