Over the past decade "Diffuse Ionized Gas" (DIG) has been recognized as an important constituent of the local interstellar medium. This component contributes significantly to the gas present in the lower halo and it contains a considerable fraction of the total atomic gas mass in the Galaxy. The recent detection of diffuse ionized gas in the disk-halo interface of some nearby edge-on spiral galaxies now allows to study fundamental questions related to its presence and physical state such as (1) where does the gas in the halo come from, and (2) what ionizes the gas far from the conventional sources of UV radiation? This paper summarizes the present observational results including some new imaging and spectroscopic data for the extraplanar component of the DIG in other galaxies and discusses possible answers to the questions raised above. NGC 891 is described in detail. Possible ionizing processes are reviewed. The author concludes that photoionization by OB stars is the most likely mechanism. The data presented here corroborate the earlier suggestion that extraplanar DIG is present in galaxies that have thick radio continuum emitting disks. Both distributions are correlated with star formation in the underlying disk. For the galaxies studied in this respect such correlations hold for global as well as local properties. The latter may imply that magnetic fields play an important ro^le.
