The angular velocity of the earth's rotation was calculated as a function of time in order to determine the evolution of the earth's gravitational field and figure. Data on the possible earth-moon system distances 4.6 billion and 4.0 billion years ago were used, and the calculated angular velocity functions were compared with paleontological data. It was assumed that tidal deceleration by the moon engenders the slowing of the earth's rotation, and that the earth is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The evolution of the earth's gravitational moments J2 and J4, flattening e, and second-order figure parameter k were calculated as functions of time and found in their first nonvanishing approximations. The lag angle variation models employed yielded an evolution period of 4.6 billion years.
