A literature search shows no uniform study of the known Galactic Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch stars (PAGBs). We propose to obtain accurate optical photometry, in both the Johnson and SDSS systems as well as in Stromgren u, of a sample of identified Galactic PAGB stars in order to achieve three well defined goals. (1) We will provide the first homogeneous dataset of these objects in the Galaxy. (2) There are arguments suggesting that PAGB stars could be excellent candidates for a new extragalactic standard candle, one that would apply to systems without Cepheids and which would provide an independent check on the current zero point of the distance scale. We will be able to probe their claimed suitability as extragalactic distance indicators by studying the real feasibility of their identification from among the much more numerous bright stars of all other types. (3) Photometry with the SDSS filter set will be of importance to Galactic studies, and we expect to determine the most effective technique for photometric identification of PAGB stars in the large forthcoming SDSS archive.
