Self-consistent two-component models are examined as part of a study of elliptical galaxies embedded in massive dark halos. A large set of models is characterized by the presence of a large amount of dark matter, photometric profiles well fitted by the R exp 1/4 law, and circular velocity and velocity dispersion profiles that are both flat and featureless. By fitting the models to observed photometric and kinematic profiles of individual galaxies, it is possible to set constraints on the presence and extent of dark halos in these objects. Detailed fits to the photometry and velocity dispersion profiles are presented for a set of bright objects. The results support the conclusion that elliptical galaxies can be embedded in massive diffuse dark halos and suggest that dark matter can be present in significant amounts even inside the half-luminosity radius.
