The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) plays a crucial role in understanding the importance of star formation activity on dust properties. The ultraviolet dust extinction in the SMC displays the largest variation and most extreme curves known. Unfortunately, UV extinction curves have been measured only along 5 lines of sight in the SMC. The small number of measured SMC extinction curves can be directly traced to the lack of accurate 2D MK spectral types for a large number of reddened, hot SMC stars. Using the SMC portion of the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey, we have defined a sample of such stars and are proposing to use the CTIO 4m equipped with the Hydra spectrograph to obtain spectral classifications for a large number of reddened and unreddened stars in the SMC. The resulting spectral classifications will provide the basis for a sample of 10-15 reddened/comparison star pairs to be observed with HST/STIS and HST/COS. By expanding the sample of measured SMC extinction curves, it will be possible to study the effects of nearby star formation on dust properties. This will help in understanding dust properties in general and in starburst galaxies.
