We propose to complete an H(alpha) imaging survey of a volume- limited sample of 385 galaxies within 11 Mpc (programs 2001A-0143, 2002A- 0047). These data will be used to derive massive star formation rates in the galaxies, and these in turn will be applied to 1) construct the local SFR distribution function as a reference for cosmological lookback studies; 2) develop new diagnostic measures of the rate and distribution of star formation in galaxy populations; 3) quantify the role of starbursts in the evolution of low-mass galaxies; 4) quantify the incompleteness biases in star formation surveys (via comparison with the NOAO SINGG survey); 5) study the environmental dependences of the SFR distribution function; 6) provide a publicly-accessible reference catalog and image database for use by workers in the field. Observations are complete for the northern hemisphere sample, and this project requests time for the 16 remaining galaxies in the southern hemisphere sub-sample.
