It has been proposed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important component of the interstellar medium. This paper considers the physical conditions met in the environment of PAHs for two cases, a reflection nebula and the diffuse interstellar medium, and evaluates the fluxes of the absorbed and emitted photons and their energy. The different interactions with the interstellar environment that give rise to an exchange of angular momentum are examined.
