A sample of about 600 wide visual double stars with known relative proper motions has been investigated for an appropriate discrimination between optical and physical pairs. The more easily available number density criterion has been combined with the ratio between the observed relative velocity and an estimated orbital velocity assuming a physical nature. After calibration, both criteria give a concordant answer. It turns out that the relative proportions of the two categories within the sample are comparable. The optical pairs show a nonrandom distribution of the angle gamma between the (tangential) radius vector and the proper motion vector. This is partially due to the history of compiling double-star catalogs. The nearly constant distribution of gamma for definitely physical pairs means that their orbits are not only highly eccentric.
