The present consideration of the effect of intergalactic magnetic fields on the peripheral shape of a spiral galaxy notes that the magnetic field contained in the galactic plane generates an elliptical shape in the outer regions; the most external isophote is more eccentric than the inner isophotes. While it is difficult to identify this shape in actual galaxies, the intergalactic magnetic field cannot be ignored when the peripheries of galaxies are studied, and may be invoked in order to interpret anomalous features observed in some spirals.
