In this thesis I discuss the importance of general relativity on plasma physics in several astrophysical and cosmological contexts. The first chapters show how gravitational waves can excite all three fundamental low frequency magnetohydrodynamic plasma modes, the Alfven, slow and fast magnetoacousic waves. Then, in a predominantly special relativistic context the inverse Compton scattering of these low frequency waves to radio waves is studied, which could make gravitational waves indirectly detectable with the Dutch LOw Frequency Array (LOFAR). As a cosmological application of general relativistic plasma dynamics, I consider scalar perturbations on a two-temperature plasma filling the entire Universe.
