A new astrophysical process is proposed: the disruption of stars by gravitational waves. The waves would be generated by the anisotropic collapse of a single supermassive object in the nucleus of a galaxy, or by the coalescence of a pair of supermassive black holes. As the powerful gravity wave is propagated outward through the surrounding star cluster, a distinctive eruption would occur: a quasar supernova. The gravitational detonation would eject material from the disruption stars and it would be accreted by the black hole, feeding its activity.
