ALMA will allow observations of prestellar cores searching for arc second scale substructure. Previous observations have shown that in nearby molecular clouds, most such sub-structure is filtered out by interferometers. With ALMA however, this situation may change. Another fertile field for ALMA should be the detection of molecular cloud material in absorption in low lying transitions against embedded protostars. Such observations may tell us a lot about kinematics and chemistry in cores. I will discuss the prospects in both these areas.
