The Delta Sct stars are characterized, with emphases on the mechanism of their 0.5-6-h mainly low-amplitude pulsations and on their evolution. The fact that some Delta Sct stars have larger pulsation amplitudes (up to 0.8 mag) is explained by means of a working hypothesis, that intrinsically large amplitudes are often reduced by the stabilizing effect of high rotational velocity (greater than v sin i = 200 km/s in some stars), by the division of the pulsation energy into a number of radial and nonradial oscillations, or by He depletion in the He II zone where the kappa mechanism excites pulsations. Consideration is given to the interpretive problems posed by the observation that some Delta Sct stars with large-amplitude regular radially symmetric pulsations exhibit gradual period shortening (rather than the expected lengthening due to increased stellar radius with age), by the superposition of radial and nonradial pulsations, and by the existence of Population II Delta Sct variables such as SX Phe.
