The ratio contours of H-alpha/forbidden N II and H-alpha/H-beta derived from monochromatic photographs of the Orion nebula enable a detailed study of the point-to-point ionization structure and temperature variation throughout the nebula. An H-alpha/H-beta ratio variation study of dust in the ionized gas shows its strongest concentration to occur in a shell, surrounding the exciting stars, with a diameter of about 2 arcmin. It is suggested that dust grains are partially or totally destroyed in regions close to the exciting stars, and that radiation pressure and stellar wind push the remaining dust up to some equilibrium distance outwards. The consequence of this is the formation of a dust mantle which in projection is seen as a ring.
