The VLBI network of radio telescopes and its principle of operation of the network are examined. The network includes the 100-m diameter steerable Effelsberg (West Germany) radio telescope, the 40-m Owens Valley Observatory telescope, and the Very Large Array in New Mexico. The VLBI network is responsible for the discovery of the superluminal motion observed in giant radio galaxies. Future plans for the VLBI networks include the QUASAT orbiting radio dish, which would provide a maximum baseline of 20,000 km, and the VLB Array in the U.S. with ten identical 25-m dishes distributed evenly across the country. Aside from offering a drastic increase in resolution the QUASAT will cover a large aperture thoroughly and uniformly throughout its five-hour orbit. The QUASAT is expected to offer a resolution of the order of 0.0001 light years at distances of 30,000 light years.
