The motion of particles ejected at different velocities from the nucleus of Comet Lexell at its 1770 perihelion passage - the first approach to the sun after a considerable reduction of the perihelion distance - is followed through the next close encounter with Jupiter in 1779. Perturbed Jovicentric and heliocentric orbits are computed for 45 model objects after a time lapse of 12 yr including the strong perturbation, and the subsequent evolution of the particle stream is discussed. Striking differences as compared with a similar experiment on Comet Oterma (Carusi et al., 1981) are mainly due to a lower value of the Tisserand invariant. A complete dispersion of the part of the stream passing closest to Jupiter, similar to an explosion, is accompanied by a very simple and continuous sequence of Jovicentric trajectories. Implications regarding the stream of meteor particles left in earth-crossing orbits will be discussed in more detail in another paper.
